Versatile PauloI hadn't heard much of Paulo Nutini before but what I had heard I liked. There is a great variety of musical styles on this album tho I like the swing/faster tracks best. I expect with further listenings the other tracks will grow on me. It is only on some tracks that his gravelly scottish tones come through. A great buy.
Pleasant surpriseMost albums have one or two good tracks and the rest are just padding. That does not apply to this one.
Paolo Nutini manages to keep you interested with changes in tempo and style, all of them good. It makes for enjoyable listening as he takes you with him through life's emotions.
sunny and happy all the wayGreat CD,does what it says on the label, makes you feel happy and sunny.Poalo Nutini has a wonderful relaxing way of singing, very soothing and yet foot tapping.I only heard of Poalo at Christmas and immediately loved his style, gentle with a hint of jazz. His songs have great lyrics, very romantic and a hint of comedy.
all over the place, still good fun thoughFirst off, I hadn't heard any of his music before, so I can't compare this to his first album.
The man is very ambitious in terms of the number of genres and the musical ground he covers with this, and I think it doesn't work. He finds great melodies and I would say his singing is first rate, but often he just tries too hard to prove that he can be Otis Redding, Bruce Springsteen and several others rolled into one, and that just doesn't sound credible. As an album, this is a mess, even if many of its constituent parts are good. The music just skips and jumps between songs.
This is still great fun to listen to. In terms of sheer musicality, I think he's remarkable, and it's nice to see someone experiment so freely. One could also call it arrogant given how young he is. In any case, I look forward to his next album, when he might have narrowed down a little bit what he thinks he's about.
